WAFLW

Round 15 saw the WAFLW back at Lane Group Stadium to take on East Perth. We were very keen to hit the scoreboard after not scoring last week.  Our focus was to take the game on, change angles and lower the eyes. Unfortunately, we lost Krystal Carter, Gracie Fenton and Kate Newson during the week.  As well as Kaitlyn Srhoj to an AFLW under 18’s academy in Melbourne. However, this gave us an opportunity to develop more players which we were very excited about.

The game was tight and contested all day. East Perth kicked the first goal of the game and it was goal for goal from there in an entertaining first quarter. We managed to kick a goal in the final minute to level the scores at the first break. The girls were excited to hit the scoreboard and we were pleased with the intent and how we were playing. Scores were 2.0 - 2.0

We encouraged the group to lift the intensity and continue to hit the 45 which paid dividends for us kicking three goals in the first 8 minutes of the quarter and looked to be running away with the game but to East Perth’s credit they responded to the challenge.  Our backs stood up to their challenge and kept them scoreless for the quarter.  Peel 5.0 – 2.0

The third quarter saw the game tighten up again with both sides kicking a goal.  The highlight of the quarter was Evie Cowcher flying high above a pack but unfortunately couldn’t control the mark but the leap alone brought the crowd to its feet.  We took a handy leady into the last break 6.1- 3.1

The last quarter was again very physical and competitive with both sides keen to take the win.  East Perth struck first with the opening goal but we responded with a goal of our own. East Perth pressed hard for the last five minutes but again our defence stood strong to secure the win.  Peel 7.2 - 4.2

While it is fantastic to get the win, the most pleasing aspect was our young players who stood up and lead the way which is a great sign moving forward.  To see all our hard work and commitment pay off was also pleasing and to lay 99 tackles for the game and look to hit the 45 was also pleasing.

This week we take on East Fremantle at Lane Group Stadium on Sunday at 2 pm.  We would love everyone to get down and support the girls in their last game of the year.

Best Players: Dakota Sexton, Bridey Jackman, Greta Mckinley, Evie Cowcher and Jordain Thompson,

Goal Kickers: Tanisha Anderson (2), Makinley Minchin (2), Holly Bilcich, Kira Phillips and Jess Ruland

ROGERS CUP

Fantastic conditions for the clash at Steel Blue Oval on Sunday.  We had a good test as Swan Districts were above us on the ladder and were dominating the ruck early. This time our forwards showed great efficiency and creative flair, kicking far more goals than behinds. In the middle, we countered the black-and-white ruck dominance with a more defensive set up and the clearances started to go our way. In the backline the girls really stood up. Despite more forward entries by swans (in all but the third quarter), we used the half backline as a springboard into the attack. The run, and use of an inside option was one of our goals for this match, and the girls played beautifully.

I would like to thank the faithful band of supporters that travelled to see and support a great game of Rogers football.

Best: Asha Cowcher, Arnya Pickston, Charlize Thompson, Abbey Westra, Sienna Guidi

Goals: all singles to Charlotte Beard, Charli Holmes, Nakia Jilley, Shareckah Jones, Charlie Stewart, BJ Thompson

This weekend both teams are hosting East Fremantle at home on Sunday afternoon in our final game for the year.  We look forward to seeing all our family, friends and supporters at the game as we look to finish the season on a high.
