WAFLW Round 13 Wrap

EAST Fremantle remained undefeated while Peel Thunder consolidated their finals position and Subiaco kept its hopes alive in Round 13 of the WAFLW competition across the weekend.

The Round 13 action got underway on Saturday afternoon at New Choice Homes Park with East Fremantle remaining undefeated and keeping West Perth winless in the 14.9 (93) to 0.2 (2) victory.

Ashlee Atkins was brilliant for the Sharks with 26 touches and three goals with Julia Teakle also kicking three goals as did Larissa Versaci. Sharon Wong also had 28 disposals while Jess Roper had 21 for West Perth.

Also on Saturday afternoon, Peel Thunder defeated South Fremantle 9.7 (61) to 7.5 (47) to retain their position in the top four at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

It was a stunning seven-goal performance for Peel from Kate Bartlett that led the way while Jaide Britton and Chloe Wrigley both had 20 touches apiece. Zoe Huggett kicked three goals for the Bulldogs and Poppy Stockwell two.

Then on Sunday, Subiaco was able to really heat up the race for a finals position by beating Swan Districts 6.9 (45) to 4.4 (28) at Leederville Oval.

Amy Mulholland kicked three goals for Subiaco and Hanna Dethlefsen two while Tarnica Golisano gathered 25 possessions. Emily McGuire kicked two goals for Swan Districts and Jaime Henry picked up 19 touches. 

That means that after 13 rounds of the 2022 WAFLW season, it's East Fremantle still clear on top of the ladder with a perfect undefeated 11-0 record.

Claremont (8-2) remains clear also in second position despite the Round 13 bye with Peel Thunder (5-5) and Swan Districts (5-6) clinging to their spots inside the top four.

Then just outside the top four is South Fremantle (4-7), Subiaco (4-6) and the winless West Perth (0-11).

Meanwhile in the lone WAFLW Reserves match up for Round 13, Swan Districts defeated Subiaco 7.12 (54) to 2.2 (14) at Leederville Oval on Sunday.

There were four matches in Round 13 of the Youth Girls Rogers competition beginning on Saturday with East Fremantle defeating West Perth 5.6 (36) to 2.4 (16) and Peel Thunder beating South Fremantle 5.11 (41) to 4.1 (25).

Then on Sunday, Claremont defeated East Perth 8.10 (58) to 6.4 (40) and Swan Districts beat Subiaco 16.6 (102) to 4.3 (27).

WAFLW PREMIERSHIP SEASON – ROUND 13

EAST FREMANTLE 14.9 (93) defeated WEST PERTH 0.2 (2)

East Fremantle remained undefeated and West Perth winless with the Sharks cruising to a 91-point win at New Choice Homes Park on Saturday.

The Sharks produced another dominant performance set up with eight goals in the first half to remain on track for an undefeated season and to claim the minor premiership with the 14.9 (93) to 0.2 (2) win against West Perth on their home turf on Saturday to open Round 13.

East Fremantle stamped its authority on the contest from the outset kicking four goals in the opening quarter and holding West Perth to just the one behind.

The Falcons weren’t able to manage a score at all in the second term with the Sharks piling on another four goals to see the league-leaders heading into half-time leading by 50 points.

It was more of the same in the second half with East Fremantle holding West Perth scoreless again in the third quarter while adding another three goals to lead by 71 points at three quarter-time.

While West Perth managed another behind in the final term, East Fremantle kicked another three goals to end up winning 14.9 (93) to 0.2 (2).

Ashlee Atkins delivered a brilliant all-round performance for East Fremantle in the big win kicking three goals to go with 26 possessions, 11 marks, seven tackles and three entries inside the forward 50.

Julia Teakle kicked another three goals for the Sharks from 12 touches and seven marks with Larissa Versaci also outstanding with three goals from 22 disposals and nine marks.

Paisley Prentice, Alli Nokes, Torrens Revell, Elle Sanders and Hayley O'Donnell all kicked a goal each as well for East Fremantle.

Sharon Wong continued her fine form for the Sharks with another 28 possessions, four marks, four tackles and four inside 50s.

Amber Kinnane also had 25 touches for East Fremantle, Zipporah Fish 25, Georgie Cleaver 22, Ashleigh Gomes 21 and Emmelie Fiedler 19 to go with 11 hit outs in the absence of Lauren Catherine in the ruck.

Jessica Roper battled hard for West Perth to finish with 21 possessions and seven tackles while Megan Norbury gathered 14 disposals, Kayla Van Den Heever 13 and Keely Byrne 13 to go with six tackles.
 

SOUTH FREMANTLE 7.5 (47) lost to PEEL THUNDER 9.7 (61)

South Fremantle had the chance to take a step closer to a historic first finals appearance with a win against Peel Thunder at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday.

However, it wasn’t quite to be with Peel overcoming a 15-point half-time deficit away to the Bulldogs with the reigning premiers kicking six goals to two in the second half.

That saw the Thunder end up prevailing 9.7 (61) to 7.5 (47) to consolidate third position on the WAFLW ladder after Round 13 while the Bulldogs remain in fifth position at 4-7.

South Fremantle and Peel came into the game with plenty on the line in the battle for a top four spot, and it was a tight start to the contest with a goal apiece in the opening quarter.

It was then South Fremantle who kicked away first in the second quarter. The Bulldogs kicked four goals to two from the Thunder in the second term to head into the half-time break leading by 15 points.

The onus was back on Peel to respond and with Kate Bartlett leading the way in attack, the Thunder kicked four goals in the third quarter to just one from the Bulldogs and that saw the reigning premiers take a five-point lead into three quarter-time.

The game was still up for grabs coming into the last term but it was Peel who finished the better with two goals to one from South Fremantle for the eventual 9.7 (61) to 7.5 (47) win to consolidate their spot inside the top four.

It was a simply stunning performance up forward from Peel young gun Kate Bartlett. She ended up kicking seven goals for the Thunder from 13 kicks, three marks, three tackles and two entries inside the forward 50.

Jaide Britton and Aisha Wright were the other goal scorers on the day for the Thunder.

Britton also racked up 20 possessions for Peel with Chloe Wrigley gathering 20 touches, Gracie Fenton 17, Ebony Dowson 16, Bella Mann 15 and Wright 15 to go with six inside-50 entries, five tackles and three marks.

Zoe Huggett made the most of her chances in attack for South Fremantle kicking three goals from five kicks. Poppy Stockwell also kicked two goals for the Bulldogs, Rosie Anderson one and Kahra Sprylan one.

Leila Fotu gathered 16 possessions for South Fremantle, Kiara Templeman 15, Casey Byrne 14, Liusaidh Gilchrist 13 and captain Lauren Vecchio 13 to go with six tackles.

Rising star Lauren Wakfer was a standout again for the Red V putting together a performance in the ruck made up of 14 disposals, 26 hit outs, five tackles, two marks and three inside-50 entries.
 

SUBIACO 6.9 (45) defeated SWAN DISTRICTS 4.4 (28)

Subiaco livened up the race for a finals position to close out the WAFLW competition for 2022 with a 17-point win over Swan Districts at Leederville Oval on Sunday.

Subiaco started Sunday's game impressively with two goals to one in the first quarter before then kicking the only two goals of the last term to end up winning 6.9 (45) to 4.4 (28).

The result improved the Lions to a 4-6 record on the season to now be hot on the heels of Swan Districts who are 5-6 in fourth position after 13 rounds of the 2022 WAFLW season.

Subiaco needed to keep winning to stay in the hunt for a top four finish again this year and they started well at home to Swan Districts with six scoring shots to one in the first quarter, and two goals to one to lead by 10 points at quarter-time.

It was just a goal apiece in the second quarter and while Subiaco were leading by 11 points at the main break, Swans were still close enough to be within striking distance.

Swans then had a strong third quarter kicking two goals to one from Subiaco and that closed the gap further with the Lions leading by just the five points at three quarter-time.

The game was right up for grabs heading into the final term and it was Subiaco who were the stronger in the last quarter kicking the only two goals to win 6.9 (45) to 4.4 (28) and heat up the race for a finals position.

Amy Mulholland ended up kicking three goals for Subiaco from 15 kicks, six inside 50s and four marks. Hanna Dethlefsen also kicked two goals and Maggie MacLachlan one.

Tarnica Golisano continued her tremendous form for the Lions racking up another 25 possessions to go with six tackles and five marks.

Tiah Toth also finished with 18 disposals for Subiaco, Jayme Harken 17, MacLachlan 16 and Madizen Wilkins 12 while Tess Lyons had 21 hit outs in the ruck.

Emily McGuire took her chance for Swan Districts kicking two goals from her three kicks with Taylah Edwards and Hope Ugle-Hayward also adding a goal for the Swans.

Jaime Henry continued her strong recent form for the black-and-whites with another game made up of 19 possessions, seven tackles, six inside-50 entries and four marks.

Aimee Ralph also had 17 touches for Swan Districts, Isabella Edgley 16, Abbygail Bushby 15 and Emma Nanut 14.
