Premiers Back on Track

Wednesday, December 2, 2020 - 12:06 PM by Owen Davies

It feels like yesterday when we rose from the bottom of the ladder in 2019 to lift the Premiership Cup at Joondalup, but here we are already three weeks into our preseason. Since that glorious day we have been lucky enough to be awarded the Team of the Year at the City of Mandurah 2020 Sport Awards.

On the back of our success this year the silky skilled Sarah Verrier was drafted to the Fremantle Dockers in the AFLW draft.  Whilst Demi Liddle and Chloe Wrigley were invited to be AFLW train-ons. Demi Liddle continued to impress at AFLW training, and after an impressive year playing full back and shutting down all the AFLW forwards in the WAFLW, Demi was added to West Coast's list after a position became available due to a long-term injury.

With the short turn around in seasons this year and our preseason already underway I have been very impressed with what I have seen to date.  Every member of the 35-person premiership squad has been training with some doubling up with state training as well.  Confidence is high and all players are in front of where they were this time last year in terms of fitness and foot skills.

We have the continued desire to improve and be better, and with more than 40 talented young players training in the Metro Development Squad, our local trials in Mandurah and a South West session, all pushing for a spot in the Rogers cup squad, the future of the club is looking very bright indeed.

There was some real positive vibes as the WAFL League boys began their Pre-Season program last night with the majority of the squad getting through their first 2km Time Trial.

For the second straight year, Zach Rankin took out the lead group time trial, with Mick Randall, Brayden Lawler, Jono Ietto, Blair Bell and Jack Walsh all setting good times for the first run of pre-season.

The boys will continue training until the 19th, before breaking for Christmas and picking back up in the new year eager to make amends on what was a difficult 2020 season on the field.
