Peel's dominant Key Defender Jacob Blight has put pen to paper for a contract extension that will see him remain at the Thunder through until the end of 2025.

“It’s with great pleasure and excitement to announce that I will be extending by time at the Peel Thunder Football Club for seasons 2024 & 2025."

"In my short time spent at the club, it has been extremely rewarding in more ways than one. I’m very grateful to be amongst a community of coaches, players and supporters who are genuinely supportive, inclusive and passionate about the game just as much as I am."

Living locally within the Peel zone in Madora bay with connections to Pinjarra, Blight joined the Thunder after the 2022 Season.

"Extending at this footy club didn’t require a second thought, with the progression of my own game, along with our playing squad, I have full faith the club is in a wonderful position going forward towards success."

"We have an exciting contingent of young developing players and leaders coming through, driving the professional standards required for the upcoming season. I’m excited to be playing a small part in obtaining our ultimate goal."

Blight's starting position in the League side was as secure as his on field defending in 2023 with his dominant play across his 22 League games earning him a spot as the WAFL team-of-the-year Centre Half-Back, Peel Thunders Best Clubman award alongside being instrumental in Peel Thunder reaching the 2023 Grand Final.

"The goal remains the same. After a disappointing finish to last year, our groups have rekindled and addressed the areas in which we need to improve.

"With the quality and commitment of our coaches and support staff from both Peel and Fremantle, I’m confident in where the club is currently at and of course where it’s heading."

"As for myself, my own personal goals and aspirations remain the same. I’m fully committed to helping and supporting my teammates in their endeavours on and off the field, but of course, we’re aiming to obtain the ultimate prize in September. Onwards and upwards from here!”

Jacob's presence at the club is not limited to his on field performances, Jacob has put himself forward as a development coach within Peel's development programmes and is continually active within the Thunder community.

General Manager of Football Operations Sam Skinner was pleased to have Blight extend his commitment to the Club.

"As a club, we’re stoked that Jacob Blight was eager to extend into next season, it represents the connected and professional environment we have at Peel Thunder. Jacob embodies our club values and has been a leader our club since arriving, setting high standards and motivating those around him to get better day in, day out."

“As a key defender, Jacob’s size and fitness, ability to play on the oppositions best forward and intercept the ball is crucial not only to our backline, but our overall team in 2024. In 2023, Jacob lead the WAFL for overall marks and intercept marks last season, averaging 6 marks and 16 disposals a game.”

"A key player on and off the field last year, being selected in the WAFL Team of the Year as a key defender and significantly contributing to our community events and volunteering as a coach with our rising stars. Backing in our people is at the forefront and we’re excited to see Jacob be a key figure in our success in 2024 and now beyond!"
