WEEKLY REVIEW | COLTS ROUND 2

Peel 1.9 15 def by Perth 9.8 62

Round two saw some challenging conditions, with the forecast of wind and rain providing a rather scrappy game with plenty of it being decided between the arcs. Perth got the jump early kicking six first-quarter goals and never looked back.

The Good

  • Campbell Millar’s First Goal – who would have thought a goal mid-way through the first quarter would be the only major we would score for the night so well done to Campbell on his first goal in Peel colours.
  • More productive first gamers – we blooded another two debutants this week in Campbell Millar and Jy Bolton. Neither looked like first gamers and instilled more confidence in the group knowing we have plenty of players on the outside just waiting to get in and make their mark.
  • Bo Allan getting the job done – asked to take on dangerous small forward, Robert Warrell after he kicked three first quarter goals. He toiled hard, curtailing the forward and keeping him goalless in the subsequent three quarters.

The Bad

  • Offence – any time you kick one goal for the match it raises questions about your offence. At the moment we are really lacking quality entries forward of centre that give our forwards any chance of capitalising on scoring chances.
  • Leaving the Hard Hat at Home – while we lost nearly all statistical areas we value, the ones that stick out the most are based around hunger for the contest. Losing contested balls by eighteen and tackle differential by seven suggests that we were second to the ball and unable to stop the opposition when they had the ball. Not a great mix.

We fall to 0-2 to start the season. Plenty of work to be done but this competition has taught us that wins are there for the taking if you’re willing to work for four quarters. We move on to the longest trip in WAFL football this week by heading to Joondalup for the Colts Super Round against South Fremantle.
