A long pre-season culminated in a round one face off on Good Friday against East Fremantle. While there were some elements of good football, the Sharks controlled all aspects of the game and were deserving of a 30-point victory.

The Good

  • Seven debutants – blooding more than half a dozen new players shows the quality of players we have within our zone and gave some early opportunities to players we see having a bright future with the club.
  • A fighting fit Jackson Klepzig – after battling numerous injuries last year we got a glimpse into the talent that the 19 year old possesses and he can only get better with more match fitness.
  • Ethan Logan the wingman – last year he was the ultimate swingman and has started the year in yet another role. Pushed back and helped our young defence as well as providing some attacking play with his elite kick.

The Bad

  • Defensive pressure – too many missed opportunities to dispossess the opposition and put them under genuine pressure at any stage meant a long day of chasing for not a lot of reward.
  • Scoreboard pressure – repeated scoring was difficult to come by. When we would gain a little momentum, we would allow an easy score going the other way which meant the Sharks would be hard to run down on the scoreboard.

Although we start the season 0-1, there are many elements within our game that we can address moving into round two. Despite not a lot going right we were only 3 goals down 12 minutes into the last quarter, which suggests with some better execution a win will be coming sooner rather than later. Watch this space!
