Talent Program Pre-Season Report

Monday, December 9, 2019 - 8:00 AM by Shaun Norman

It doesn’t feel like the WAFL Colts Grand Final was that long ago and we’re already two weeks into pre-season for the 2020 campaign.

Young men from all corners of the Peel and South West regions recently congregated at the newly established Lakelands Park to begin their preparations for season 2020 with high hopes of making the Peel Thunder Football Club’s Colts (17 – 19 year olds) or Futures (15 – 17 year olds) squads.

The Colts program will again be led by Michael Glassborow who helped the program finish on top of the 2019 WAFL Colts ladder and fall just short of the club’s 3rd WAFL Colts premiership. The Futures program has experienced a coaching change in the off-season following Jayden Heuer vacating the position to focus on his Colts Assistant Coach role. This opened up an opportunity for Glen Andrews to lead the playing group that he has had a lot to do with through the U/14’s and U/15’s in recent times. Glen held the Forwards Coach role with the Colts in 2019 and has also coach at senior community level.

Players from both programs are putting in the hard yards early on and are being pushed to their physical limits by Strength and Conditioning Coaches Ethan Lamers and Eben Gericke. Conditions have been uncomfortably hot at times but that hasn’t stopped these young men from trying to get the best out of themselves.

Special mention to the players travelling from the South West region of WA to improve their footy and thank you to Jamie Douse and his team in the South West Talent Hub for the time and energy they put into development of these players when they’re not training with Thunder.

There will be one more week of training before players and staff enjoy the Christmas break and return in January ready to take their game to another level.

Keep an eye out for 2020 WAFL Colts and Futures fixtures set to be released soon.
