Lessons Learnt before meeting with Royals
By Katie de Haer
Peel Thunder coach Cam Shepherd believes that there are many lessons to be learnt from the club’s Round One loss to Perth Football Club at Brownes Stadium on Saturday.
In a statement released on the club’s website earlier this week, Shepherd praised the efforts of his team who faced a ‘tough encounter’ against a ‘determined Demons outfit’, but acknowledged that they had to be accountable for the reasons for the loss.
“It is important we do not give any opposition a five goal start.
“We must also make sure we put scoreboard pressure on opposition when we are in control of the game and it is important that all players play their role and be sure to always give 100% effort,” he said.
Shepherd also took the opportunity to congratulate those who were playing in their first match for the club.
“It was pleasing to note many players pulled on the PT jumper for the first time, including three teenagers (Moller, Forster and Smith) as well as Motlop, Jacky, Bower, Hawksley (and) Hannath,” he said.
Jack Hannath, a Fremantle listed player, was particularly impressive in the ruck, with 11 possessions and five marks.
Swan Districts recruits Marlon Motlop and Jarrhan Jacky performed well in their first game for Peel – Motlop with 22 disposals and five marks and Jacky with 15 disposals and a goal.
Peel Thunder will travel again this Saturday to Medibank Stadium in Leederville to take on the East Perth Royals who are coming off a 75 point loss to fierce rivals West Perth in their opening derby match.
Shepherd repeated the importance of learning from the results of their Round One defeat and to be accountable for these going into Saturday’s match.
“The expectation is now we prepare for East Perth and leave no stone unturned in making sure we perform to our standards,” he said.
