Rnd 5, 2011

Our trip the newly badged Browne’s Stadium to play Perth proved to be a disappointing one with both League and Reserves being convincingly beaten by a much improved Perth outfit. After being wooden spooners in 2010, they have certainly showed what new found commitment, believe and hard work can achieve. They were clearly superior with their leg speed and foot skills, and certainly showed us how much further improvement is needed if we are to take the necessary steps forward in 2011.

A poor 1st Q proved to be the difference in the game with Perth getting away to a quick start to kick 3 goals before we could get our hands on the ball. Although we worked hard to get back into the game, Perth’s lead at ¼ time of 6-4 to 2-1 was decisive. Peel did make a charge during the 2nd Q and at times had Perth under pressure but we were unable to convert opportunities. 3 missed goals from the goal square did not help our cause and highlighted our poor skill and decision making errors that were evident at times during the game. Clearly we should have been closer than the 9-7 to 4-5  scoreline at half time.

To the players credit they did respond after ½ time and played some of the football we know we are capable of. The flat spots in games are proving critical to the overall results and Perth too was able to take advantage of this and kick too many easy goals. To kick 10 goals after half time to Perth’s 11 showed that we can compete when playing at our best.

We do need to focus on playing four consistent quarters of football, and when we do then I’m sure wins will come our way.

Results:

League Perth20-14 to Peel Thunder 14-9

The better players were Ryan Herring at CHF, Dev Macfarlane in defence, while Rhys Healey and Brendon Jones tried hard as midfielders. Congratulations to Lindsay Lawler who made his league debut for the club coming from our colt’s squad in 2010. Unfortunately we suffered another serious injury early in the 1st Q with our talented wingman Kieran Butcher dislocating his shoulder and could take no further part in the game. We do wish ‘Butch’ a speedy recovery.

Reserves Perth 15-12 to Peel Thunder 10-7

The better players were Josh Wilson in defence and Travis Murphy playing in the midfield. Bradley Holmes finished with 5 goals and showed a return to league football is close. It was pleasing to see Rhys Senior, Brad Green and Callan Eddy get through a full game after returning from injury.

This week we travel to Joondalup to play an undefeated West Perth. So another big challenge for the group, but one they will take up!

See you at the footy.
